Curriculum English

                                                                               English Language

Children need to have confidence in themselves, their ideas and their ability to communicate.  We encourage this throughout our school by devoting time to listening to children, both individually and in groups and by responding to them in a positive and constructive manner.  The child?s own language must be accepted, but the child is helped to extend and adjust their ways of speaking and listening according to purpose and context.

We encourage an enthusiasm for writing and our classrooms are places where writing is shared and valued.  Children come to school with a wealth of personal experiences behind them and it is these experiences we use to introduce children to writing.

Through a structured progression our aim is to teach children to write fluently and appropriately by developing their skills of effective writing for a variety of audiences and purposes.  We adopt a systematic emphasis on knowledge about language, the understanding and use of language structures, conventions and grammatical terminology.

Reading

We are anxious to ensure that our children not only learn to read but enjoy books for the story content or for the interesting facts they contain and to encourage children to use books to retrieve information.

Our policy is to help children to develop the necessary skills needed to become competent readers.  These include the teaching of phonics, recognising familiar words and anticipating a word from the comprehension of the sentence.  Therefore we have many activities and games to help children to learn to read and have a great variety of books in school.

We also like to promote reading partnerships between parents and children and between children in their own class and in other classes too.

The reading is closely linked to the teaching and learning of spelling and to written work.

We are delivering the National Literacy Strategy as part of our English Programme.
